    Facility Description:

    South County Surgical Center is a multi-specialty surgery center with 2 OR’s, 2 procedure rooms, and 1 minor procedure room. Specialties include urology, general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, gyn, plastics, and gastroenterology. Facility hours are Monday-Friday from 5:00am to 5:00pm.

    Accountabilities / Responsibilities

    The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for all aspects of nursing care delivery in the facility. Assumes responsibility as Department Manager of PACU/OR Departments. The DON is also responsible for the Quality Improvement/Risk Management Program for the center and Education Coordinator for the facility, as well. Assumes some responsibility of the Administrator in her absence. As a Registered Nurse, the DON is also responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge.


    Key Responsibilities:

    • Provides clinical and operational expertise for the facility.
      • Recommends/develops services and programs consistent with and appropriate to the individual’s facility environment.
      • Collaborates with physicians, managers, and team members to identify innovative programs that will affect growth, quality, and/or efficiency of each facility.
      • Assists in the development of annual goals and objectives of the facility, ensuring that goals are appropriate and mutually beneficial to the facility.
      • Collaborates with nurse managers and clinical personnel to develop goals and objectives specific to nursing.
      • Communicates/interprets annual goals and objectives to nursing management and team members to ensure understanding of differing and/or similar goals at the facility.
      • Monitors goals and objectives and program implementation, reporting progress to the Administrative Director.
      • Develops/implements/coordinates physician recruitment and retention plan to ensure growth.
    • Collaborates with the Administrator and SCA to create, update, interpret, and enforce personnel policies and procedures at the facility.
      • Collaborates with nursing managers and team members to develop operating room, procedure room, and recovery room standards of care, job descriptions, performance standards, orientation programs, continuing education programs and all evaluation tools.
      • Provides for continuing education, assuring accurate record keeping for personnel files, state licensing and accreditation surveyors.
      • Monitors/evaluates the performance of nurse against establish performance standards and their professional goals.
      • Reviews all performance evaluations of the operating room, procedure room, and post-anesthesia care unit staff.
      • Develops/implements/evaluates nurse recruitment and retention program that reflects the staffing needs of the facility.
      • Hires, disciplines, promote and terminate nurses, as appropriate.
      • Develops/evaluates policies, procedures, and positions to efficiently coordinate personnel within the facility.
    • Collaborates with the Administrator in the development of the clinical budgets for the facility, monitoring expenses and reporting of variances.
      • Develops/implements/evaluates cost-control policies and procedures; teammate corrective action plans for cost-control problems.
      • Directs the materials management program, ensuring contract pricing, timely purchasing, using SCA SCO contracts negotiation with vendors, manufacturers and purchased services.
      • Monitors the equipment, supply, pharmaceutical and clinical staffing expenses as each facility. Investigates variances against established budget and staffing standards, reporting variances to the Administrator taking corrective action, as appropriate.
      • Evaluates on an ongoing basis the efficiency of coordinating personnel and equipment at the facility.
      • Ensures operations within the approved budget.
      • Assists with the capital equipment budgets, based on program needs, working with medical staff at the facility to access needs and maximize benefit of equipment.
      • Manages inventory system to provide financial data to the Administrator for budget planning.
    •  Demonstrates leadership ability and exceptional professional behavior while conducting day-to-day responsibilities at the facility.
      • Serve as a resource to Lead Clinicians, and staff for administrative policies and procedures and for budgetary information.
      • Ensures physician compliance within established credentialing parameters.
      • Assists with physician and staff satisfaction at the facility on a quarterly basis, reporting results to Administrator.
      • Fosters/enforces empowerment and accountability among staff to increase teammate satisfaction and to enable optimum efficiency of operations.
      • Provides/maintains positive public relations with all customers to create beneficial affiliations for the facility.
      • Develops/implements/evaluates systems to maintain clear communications and efficient operations between clinical and non-clinical areas.
      • Provides back up to administrator duties as needed in the absence of the administrator in conjunction with the business office manager.
    • Develops, through collaboration with the nursing team, all clinical policies, procedures, and programs for the facility.
      • Develops, directs and participates in the Performance Improvement, Risk Management, Safety, Injury Illness Prevention and Infection Control programs; and ensures orientation, staff training, and documentation in these programs.
      • Monitors these programs and reports results to the Administrator.
      • Attends/directs facility staff meetings, nursing management meetings, safety meetings, and Quality Council meetings as appropriate.
      • Assures that all clinical policies and procedures are consistent with accepted nursing standards of practice, facility standards, state, and Medicare regulatory requirements, accrediting body guidelines and OSHA guidelines.
      • Monitors programs and standards of care to ensure that standards are equally applied and maintained at the facility.
      • Interprets and enforces clinical policies and procedures as necessary for Lead Clinicians and the clinical team.
      • Ensures that the facility adhere to all facility administrative policies and procedures.
      • Utilizes the daily labor tool to coordinate and optimize scheduling of teammates and physician cases on a daily basis.



    • Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing with current MO state licensure to practice.
    • Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS)/Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current BLS/BCLS certification.
    • At least 2 year of multi-specialty ambulatory surgery management experience required.
