    Facility Description:

    Hawthorn Surgery Center is a busy, multi-specialty, 5 OR, outpatient surgery center, primarily performing orthopedics, ENT, urology, podiatry and pain management procedures. Our center’s new building opened 4 years ago in Vernon Hills, IL and we are growing at an excitingly rapid pace. 

    Accountabilities / Responsibilities

    As the Business Office Clerk, you will support the facility by greeting patients/visitors, registering patients, answering phones and acting as a resource for facility. We are looking for someone to work the morning shift from 6:00 am – 2:30 pm, Monday through Friday.


    Key Responsibilities:

    • Greet patients and visitors to the facility.
    • Register patients and verify patient identity, financial, demographic and insurance information.
    • Direct patient to complete and review forms including all admission and HIPAA documents
    • Obtain patient/responsible party signatures.
    • Accept and record patient cost share payments.
    • Maintain patient privacy per HIPAA regulations.
    • Answer all incoming calls to the facility. Relay information in accurate, concise manner.
    • Open mail, date stamp and distribute.
    • Prepare charts for next day cases, ensuring medical records from previous visit are retrieved
    • Ensure the accuracy of filing paperwork in medical charts and conducts medical record completion audits
    • Maintain clean and tidy waiting room/lobby area including visitor restrooms
    • Act as a resource for facility visitors and physicians.


    • High School graduate or equivalent
    • Clerical experience, preferably in a health care environment
    • One – three years work experience in medical office, hospital or ambulatory surgery center, preferred.
    • Possess working knowledge of medical terminology and HIPAA guidelines
    • Computer experience, Medical software and applications, Word, Excel
    • Knowledge of office machines (i.e. computer, scanner, fax, copier, multi-line phone system with voicemail, etc.).
    • Is courteous, understanding and sympathetic toward patients, physicians and others.
    • Ability to be flexible with work schedule and maintain regular attendance.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities and work independently.
    • Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, supervisor and other facility employees.
