    Facility Description:

     

    We are Alaska’s premier Ambulatory Surgery Center. We are a 9 Operating room multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center in the heart of Anchorage and a few blocks from the greater outdoors. The bulk of our cases are orthopedics, plastics, ENT, Podiatry, Urology, General Surgery, OBGYN, Eyes, and Dental. No weekend or call! Patients have their surgery in a warm, inviting environment and are discharged home after recovery. The facility

    Accountabilities / Responsibilities

    The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for maintaining instruments and equipment in an optimal fashion and preparing instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies for the surgical patient. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible to assist with the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes, and to achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the clinical leader. The Sterile Processing Clerk main focus will be on process improvement in our multi-specialty center. Cross training to all specialties will be an expectation. Teamwork is a MUST!

     

    Key Responsibilities:

     

    • Delivers safe patient care as directed by the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse and according to facility policy and procedure.
    • Demonstrates knowledge of specific responsibilities in all emergency situations.
    • Demonstrates ability to respond to patient care needs in an emergency situation and under direction of Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
    • Initiates and implements basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (BCLS) under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
    • Provides appropriate interventions related to safety issues according to job position, role and responsibilities and assigned by the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
    • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for position.
    • Completes competencies and competencies checklists for ongoing education and training according to job position, role and responsibilities, and according to facility policy and schedule.
    • Functions as a Sterile Processing Technician under the direction of the Clinical Leader/Registered Nurse.
    • Knowledge of sterilization procedures, aseptic technique, and maintenance and care of instruments and equipment.
    • Knowledge of standards and engages in practices and procedures of sterile technique.
    • Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area, in appropriate sequence, for storage and/or processing.
    • Differentiates sterilization and disinfection methods required for specific instruments and equipment.
    • Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers, and other designated processors.
    • Demonstrates ability to understand use, function, interpretation, documentation, and record-keeping of chemical and biological indicators related to instrument and equipment sterilization and low, intermediate, and high-level disinfection processes.
    • Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information in accordance with established standards.
    • Cleans wraps, sterilizes, and disinfects instruments and equipment and maintains the functions of the instrument processing area/department.
    • Perform weekly inventory of processing supplies and notifies appropriate personnel of order needs.
    • Assists teammates with daily preparation for current and future facility schedules (pulling cases and assembling supplies) as assigned.
    • Responsible for crossover duties in other areas such as purchasing supplies and inventory management in proper areas according to facility policy and management guidance.
    • Demonstrates flexibility in assuming duties and responsibilities.
    • Assists in room turnover and patient transfers/positioning when needed and as assigned.
    • Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Completes all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by facility policy and according to management guidance.
    • Practices infection control and standard precautions as instructed or trained.

    Qualifications

    • 3 years or more of sterile processing experience in a hospital environment or ASC.
    • High school graduate or equivalent. Understanding of sterilization and high-level disinfection technologies including industry standardized principles and practice in sterilization and disinfection required. Prior experience in instrument processing required. Prior experience as a surgical technologist/procedure technologist preferred. Successful completion of BCLS Course within 90 days of employment required or documentation of current BCLS certification. Certification in instrument processing is preferred.
    • Indoors in climate controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, to blood and body fluids which may carry infection, to infectious disease, and to chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate.
    • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good visual acuity, accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement. Ability to stand, walks, stoops, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape. Ability to speak and hear.  Ability to stand for eight hours.
    • MACHINES/EQUIPMENT USED: Autoclave, Washer/Sterilizer, Sterrad, Steris, BI Incubator. Office equipment: computer, Copier.
