Professional Support Staff (Operating Rooms Assistant) – Lakeside Surgery Center

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

To support the facility by assisting teammates with the turnover of surgery rooms, cleaning and stocking of sterile supplies in OR rooms, transporting of patients, physical maintenance of equipment and assigned areas. The PSS teammate will function within the Center’s policies and procedures, support SCA Values, SCA Vision and SCA Mission.  


Key Responsibilities:

  • Understands and prioritizes patient needs.
  • Assure all ancillary areas are properly prepared for the daily scheduling including:Preparation of supplies and restocking
  • Verifies working order of all equipment.
  • Putting away of delivered order.
  • Keep stock rooms supplied from lower level.
  • Lift assistance and patient transport.
  • Troubleshooting and reporting of all broken or defective supplies or equipment.
  • Checking supplies and restocking as needed.
  • Organizes supplies and equipment in a space efficient manner.
  • Restocks supplies, wipes tables and empties dishwasher in teammate lounge on a daily basis.
  • Provides emotional support for the patient.
  • Maintains a safe environment for treating patients, including safeguards to protect the patient from cross infection.
  • Assists in implementation of quality assurance program, seek out quality improvement methods.
  • Assures cost effectiveness and cost containment while ensuring quality of care rendered.
  • Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for meeting standards for cleaning and handling sterile supplies according to policy and procedures of facility.
  • Demonstrates knowledge, and proper use, of protective clothing and eyewear in the work setting.
  • Works with charge nurse and all other ASC personnel together as a team.
  • Uses good body mechanics and aseptic techniques; follows universal precautions, blood borne pathogen procedures and uses personal protective equipment as needed while cleaning operating rooms.
  • Willing to learn and rotate to other processes/areas when/where needed.
  • Makes every possible effort to assure patient confidentiality when speaking with patients. i.e. speaks in a low volume of voice when speaking to a patient.
  • Possess strong initiative to get daily work finished and processed.
  • Is courteous, understanding and sympathetic toward patients, physicians and others.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.
  • Ability to set priorities and work independently.
  • Warm, friendly personality with a commitment to treat patients with compassion and respect.
  • Ability to interact in a positive manner and to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, physicians, supervisor and other facility teammates.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Ability to use discretion in dealing with the public.
  • Escorts those patients who are an identified fall risk to and into their vehicle.
  • Maintains patient privacy per HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by facility management.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year experience in area of responsibility, preferred. 
  • BLS course completion.
