Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Responsibilities are to receive, decontaminate, test, assemble, and sterilize various reusable instruments and trays. Decontaminate, test, and make ready for re-use routine patient care equipment. Receive and store supplies and instruments. Operate various cleaning and sterilization equipment. Assist the Sterile Processing Supervisor/Manager with quality control and documentation of all sterilization processes. May assume responsibilities of supervision of his or her absence and under the direction of the Sterile Processing Manager.

  • Demonstrate ability to properly decontaminate patient care equipment
  • Retrieve equipment from operating rooms as necessary.
  • Perform decontamination and performance testing in accordance with established procedures.
  • Utilize cleaning agents in accordance with manufacturers' instructions.
  • Notify the appropriate Supervisor and/or buyer of any malfunctioning equipment.
  • Prepare and sterilize supplies
  • Receive, prepare, and sterilize items with steam sterilization in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Assemble surgical trays in accordance with current component list.
  • Prepare and file appropriate documentation for each sterilizer load.
  • Properly load, operate, and clean all sterilizers and all equipment using biological and chemical controls as required by policies and procedures.
  • Operate cleaning and sterilization equipment
  • Perform daily or weekly sterilization validation tests per procedure per sterilizer in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Monitor equipment through all phases of operation.
  • Assesses others in adherence to principles of asepsis.
  • Ensures that all sterilization logs and records are correctly complete.

Qualifications

  • Current certification as BLS Healthcare Provider. Certified Sterile Processing Technician. Certification through IAHCSMM or CBSPD (within six months)
  • Preferred:  Certification Healthcare Leadership (CHL) through IAHCSMM.
  • Required:  Previous sterile processing experience required. Two years working in a sterile processing environment required.
