Facility Description:

UCSD Center for Surgery of Encinitas is a growing and fast paced multi-specialty outpatient surgical center located in Encinitas, CA.  Center for Surgery of Encinitas specializes in orthopedic, ENT, general surgery, GYN, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, podiatry, Urology and pain management.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for the provision of patient care to meet identified patient outcomes and to achieve the goals of the facility as directed by the RN.  The Surgical Technologist performs duties according to scope of practice designated by the facility job description and responsibilities according to the Surgical Technologist professional organization and Certification Board.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the preparation of the operating room for surgical procedures.
  • Assists with skin preparations and with draping of patients.
  • Assists with care, preparation, maintenance and after-care of sterile and un-sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Understands and practices the principles and procedures of sterile technique.
  • Handles specimens in accordance with facility policy and procedures.
  • Removes drapes at end of procedure, cleanses the patients of prep solution and applies dressing as needed.
  • Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for processing.
  • Assists with room turnover to ensure quick turnaround time.
  • Differentiates sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment.
  • Participates in sponge, instrument and needle count with the circulating nurse.
  • Demonstrates ability to understand and use sterilizers, high-level disinfectors, instrument washers and other designated processors.
  • Demonstrate ability to understand use, function, interpretation, documentation and record-keeping of chemical and biological indicators related to instrument and equipment high-level disinfection processes.
  • Demonstrates understanding of operating room technical equipment according manufacturer’s instructions for use and center policies and procedures.
  • Assists with stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies.
  • Assists with updating physician preference cards.
  • Keeps current of surgical and sterile processing techniques and best practices.
  • Experience in Ophthalmology, ENT, General Surgery, Plastics, Orthopedics, Urology and Pain Management.



  • Required: Graduate of a recognized and accredited Operating Room Surgical Technician Program (Certification Current) or at least 3 – 5 years of experience in Hospital or ASC OR setting.
  • Preferred: Prior experience in Ophthalmology, ENT, General Surgery, Plastics, Orthopedics, Urology and Pain Management.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of and experience processing instrumentation according to AIMEE standards. 
  • Required: Successful completion of BCLS course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current BCLS certification.
