Accountabilities / Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the OR Manager, the OR Registered Nurse provides direct patient care in accordance with federal, state and Joint Commission regulations, hospital policies and procedures.  


Key Responsibilities:

  • Completes assessments and formulates an individual plan for each patient. Identifies and helps resolve ethical and clinical concerns. Preserves and protects the confidentiality, autonomy, dignity and rights of our patients and their families.
  • Pre-procedure verification process: Verifies procedure with patient in pre-op, assures surgical site is marked prior to taking patient to OR, receives verbal hand-off communication from pre-op nurse, conducts time out assuring active participation by all members of surgical team.
  • Must have good organizational skills, work independently, educated on the use of equipment needed to perform procedures in the surgical department.
  • Accurately documents the times of each procedure, Monitors, records and communicates patient’s condition during procedure.
  • Counts, labeling of medications on and off the sterile field. Updates physician preference cards as needed.
  • Assures antibiotics are administered timely according to SCIP protocols.
  • Assures H&P's are current and updated at time of procedure.
  • Improves nursing practice and work environment through active participation in decision making processes in the unit.
  • Required to take call in accordance with the hospitals policy.
  • Function as a team member and works collaboratively and interdependently with fellow team members and other departments in the hospital. Open and sensitive to all team members' unique contributions. Copes well with stress and pressure. Maintains positive outlook. Shares information appropriately. Participates in the recognition program and recognizes the contributions of others.


  • Education, Vocational Training and Experience: Associate degree in Nursing; Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree - Nursing
  • Experience: 2-5 years of OR Experience
  • Certifications: License: RN; Certifications: BLS, ACLS  Preferred: PALS
