SCA owns and/or provides management services to 200+ ambulatory surgery centers, surgical hospitals, and hospital surgery departments, in partnership with approximately 3,000 physicians and in affiliation with leading health systems. Accountabilities / Responsibilities

The Absence Management Leader is responsible for managing the Family Medical Leave (FMLA), state specific, and other Medical Leave Processes for eligible employees. Position ensures vendor partner meets terms of service agreement. The Leave Administrator is responsible for the accurate and daily tracking, organizing, and coordination of all leaves of absence including determining eligibility and rights, processing requests, collection of paperwork and communication. As an SCA Leave Administrator you will provide guidance to employees regarding leave policies and procedures. Leave Administrators ensure compliance with all federal and state laws and SCA policies


This role would be located out of corporate office in Deerfield Illinois or our Regional Business Office in Birmingham Alabama



  • Responsible for total leave management from intake to closure.
  • Manage all leave related activities between the centers and MetLife, vendor partner, including but not limited to initiating PAFs for all teammates leaving for and returning from leave
  • Monitors FMLA and Medical Leave of Absence approvals, denials and return to work communications with employees, vendor partner and human resources.
  • Analyze medical documentation, certifications and leave forms received and implement follow up actions per SCA procedures. Analyze individual employee situations and recommend to supervisors and human resources applicable outcomes.
  • Reviews monthly leaves and disability reports, conducts analysis of data, and provides action for leadership and/or managers based on results of data analysis
  • Initiates continuing education to gain full working knowledge of new or changing legal requirements and best practices effecting SCA’s leave, disability and time off plans
  • Develops, deploys and trains managers and HR on new leaves and disability Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and ensures protocols are being adhered to
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for legislative and compliance updates related to FMLA and State leaves
  • Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) within SCA regarding absence management trends in the market and industry


  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, business or related field
  • 3 years of professional level experience in human resources this includes a combination of leave or disability management (FMLA, ADA, etc.) and employee relations
  • Thorough knowledge of STD, FMLA, LTD plans and policies, and Workers’ Compensation as it relates to integration with leave and disability as well as compliance
  • Intermediate knowledge of general system environments and process flows
  • Basic knowledge of overall financial management, impact of absence on the business
  • Comprehensive knowledge of disability concepts, disability products, medical terminology, and claim management practices and principles
  • Advanced skill level in Microsoft Office, (Word, and Excel) required. Previous HRIS and or Leave Software experience
