Surgical Care Affiliates is one of the largest providers of outpatient surgery in the United States. Based in Deerfield, Illinois, SCA strategically partners with health plans, medical groups, and health systems across the country to develop and optimize surgical facilities. SCA operates more than 220 surgical facilities, including ambulatory surgery centers and surgical hospitals, in partnership with approximately 3,000 physicians. In early 2017, SCA was acquired by Optum, which is part of UnitedHealth Group. 

Accountabilities / Responsibilities

The Director of Strategy & Business Development is a key member of the sales growth leadership team and has ownership over initiatives such as clinical education for the sales team, marketing to support physician recruitment, strategic oversight of conferences and events, and volume growth analytics. This role will also support strategic vendor partnerships and Optum/SCA growth initiatives. This role has high visibility to the SCA and Optum Executive teams.


Position will focus on 4 primary areas

  • Development and implementation of clinical education training for sales force
  • Creation of marketing tools and resources to facilitate physician recruitment
  • Content development for industry conferences and regional events, with a focus on spine, total joints and cardiovascular
  • Aggregation and presentation of analytics related to surgical volume growth


Ideally, the position will be based out of the Deerfield corporate office, with approximately 25% travel for conferences and meetings, and offers flexibility for occasional remote work.


  • MBA from a top business school
  • Exposure to healthcare industry, including familiarity with healthcare providers
  • Experience with strategic marketing, developing impactful messaging and evaluating its effectiveness following implementation
  • Demonstrated leadership in effective project and meeting management
  • Analytical and quantitative reasoning skills, including experience simplifying large data sets for presentation to executive leadership teams
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Exceptional experience with Excel, PowerPoint and familiarity with Tableau, SalesForce
  • Healthcare consulting experience is preferred
