    POSITION PURPOSE:                                                      



    This position contributes to the mission of the surgery center by the inclusion of technical duties that support the plan of care developed and implemented for the surgical patient.  The position contributes to the department goals through the provision of quality services.




    The Surgical Technician reports to the Director of Nursing works collaboratively to provide quality care for patients, families and physicians and shares their technical expertise and knowledge with other members of the health care team.

    Accountabilities / Responsibilities

    • Performs duties according to department specific expectations as identified and assigned.
    • Assists with patient care activities under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse.
    • A Surgical Technologist performs surgical technology tasks and functions that are performed with other members of the surgical team that includes:
      • Preparing the operating room for surgical procedures by ensuring the equipment is functioning properly and safely.
      • Preparing the operating room and the sterile field for surgical procedures by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique.
      • Demonstrates knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how it relates to the patient and surgical procedure.
      • Performs tasks in the sterile field.
    • Performs in the role of scrub nurse according to the plan of patient care and departmental staffing needs.
    • Functions in the role of assistant as necessary under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
    • Anticipates usual and unexpected events during the surgical procedure and responds in an efficient manner.
    • Adheres to aseptic practices providing and maintaining a safe environment.
    • Handles and processes surgical specimens according to established policy/procedure.
    • Demonstrates an appropriate level of understanding, awareness, and compliance with applicable Joint Commission, Federal, State and agency laws, regulations, guidelines and professional standards.
    • Serves as a clinical resource for clinical questions about surgical procedures, instrumentation and equipment.
    • Demonstrates proficient ability to scrub on all site-specific specialties and types of surgical procedures.
    • Serves as a preceptor in training and orientation of fellow staff members and students.
    • Accepts and seeks additional responsibilities, roles, duties, and special projects.
    • Assumes responsibility for professional growth through participation in educational programs.
    • Consistently provides exceptional customer service.  Communicates professionally with physicians, and staff.




    Required: Minimum of 2 years surgical technology experience and ability to scrub in multiple specialties.

    Required: Completion of an approved Surgical Technology Program

    Preferred: Certification in Surgical Technology

    BLS required upon hire.  (Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include the following:  American Red Cross:  CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Safety and Health Institute:  CPR, PRO, must say “Professional Level-with AED”, and American Heart Association:  Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.)
